G.O.C.A. The Gallery of Contemporary Art

The Gallery of Contemporary Art (G.O.C.A.)
is a self-contained portable exhibition space located in a suitcase. It is an ongoing project founded by Los Angeles based artist Ed Gomez.  The objective of G.O.C.A. is to provide an alternative space for artists to call into question curatorial and institutionalized practices. Previous installments have included conservators and art preparators of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and several Southern California based artists.
G.O.C.A. has a growing permanent collection of artworks from previously exhibited artists and a gift shop with original G.O.C.A. merchandise.  Exhibition catalogs, booklets, t-shirts, and postcards may be purchased in G.O.C.A.’s traveling external gift shop.

I.C.E. project

I.C.E. The Institute of Culture and Esthetics/Instituto de Cultura y Estetica, 2009

Tijuana, Mexicali, Los Angeles

Ed Gomez/I.C.E

Materials: Mixed media installation with video, photographic documentation catalogues and posters

The Institute of Culture and Esthetics/ Instituto de Cultura y Estetica is an organization established to create accessible archives and information centers for the purpose of protecting and promoting knowledge.  For the 09/10 MexiCali Biennial, I.C.E. has compiled various forms of documentation covering the previous MexiCali Biennial events and exhibitions in order to create a single source of information.

The printed portion of the archive consists of digital images and files that have been  processed  based on numerical and alphabetical titles as well as file formats.  I.C.E. has taken this digitally sorted material and created a single printed catalogue which is titled, Codex 06/09/10.  The result is an archive of digital information and images presented in a systematic manner with didactic text.  The purpose for I.C.E.’s MexiCali Biennial project is to preserve the various forms of information, provide referential sources, and create an authoritarian source of information to guide public understanding.

Below are images of the various installations of I.C.E. for the MexiCali Biennial 09/10 in  Mexicali, Tijuana and Los Angeles.
